Analysis of 3 existing horror films

Paranormal Activity - Supernatural:
The intro makes the lives of the characters in the movie seem normal until the trailer starts playing eery music. The dramatic music with loud thuds. The lighting is very dark (minimal/none) to connote evilness and badness. This immediately shows us that it's a horror movie. The editing used is also a way to allow the audience to feel unsettled along with the camera shots. This accompanied with the eery and then suddenly dramatic music creates suspense and adrenaline causes fear however allows the audience to be more intrigued as to what happens next.

Don't knock twice -
Image result for don't knock twiceThe entering music is full of suspense as the music is low and drags instruments such as violins are further used. Unusual sounds are further played by different instruments. Slowly the sounds become faster and stop suddenly with a sharp loud sound i.e. "BAM". The lighting is always kept to a minimal which creates a sense of mysteriousness increasing the audience's curiosity. The editing done helps increase that along with the adrenaline as it is very jumpy (it moves from one shot to another). The stereotypical old woman who lives in an isolated house alone is also used which is a frequently used story line and stereotype of elderly (such as the old man in the movie "Don't breathe"). Mis-en-scene crops used such are drawn in with church which subverts the idea of church being religious, holy and good. Religion is another frequently explored by horror movies.

Cloverfield - Monster:
The beginning starts off normal however the sound used sends another message to the audience (it's very digital). The sounds of destruction used installs a sense in the audience as with destruction comes evil. The lighting as per usual is kept to a minimum as darkness connotes evilness. The camera shot used is extreme close up as the man records himself. The lighting and this camera angle shows that the man is in some sort of trouble as he seems confined ina hiding area. The digital sounds also give a modern touch to this. The editing used to flash from scene to scene further creates suspense as we aren't sure what is going on,  but through sound and lighting know that it's bad. Destructive lights and images of war further create suspense and fear as it's against an unknown creature. The fact that it's hidden the whole way through the trailer further emphasises the fear in the audience as its identity is hidden.
