Audience essay

To create a successfully scary trailer, there are theories that the audience theory consists of which the trailer should follow as it analyses the behaviour and reaction towards horror movie genres. The better the reactions from the audience, the better the trailer is therefore analysing them may help improve of future trailer. The Hypodermic model theory suggests that the deeper messages in movies and trailers are "injected" into the audience and can influence their actions and mindsets towards things e.g. The constant convention of darkness being connoted as evil has influenced our mindsets towards the dark so much so that now people are scared not of the dark but of what it holds as in horror movies there's always a a physical/spiritual form of evil that can hurt us. One of the many similarities is the suitable masthead. On the cover of the Kerrang magazine (March 2011 Edition), the page denotes a certain font. The font appears rough and has parts of the letters disappearing. In addition to this, denoted on it is a crack across it- this is a way of connoting the rock music. This was similarly denoted on my front cover- I also chose an edgy font that looked as if though it was deteriorating. I believe that despite the overuse of certain conventions and iconography presented in horror movies, the movies still fulfill their aim of attracting an audience and "scaring" them, not necessarily because of the conventions themselves, but because of the meaning behind them. Our summer horror trailer was based on a slasher sub genre. Similarly to other sub genres, there are conventions and iconography that are typically denoted in every slasher movie and my group and I followed certain ones so the audience could easily identify our sub genre without us saying so. A way in which our trailer told the audience its sub genre was through mis en scene; through the use of clothing that our antagonist wore. Our antagonist wore a pair of gloves to hide his hands as that helped emphasise the lack of identity consequently enforcing the sense of mysteriousness which as a result would build fear and adrenaline in the audience.
