I believe that where regulation was once important, there is no respect for it anymore and therefore its purpose has become defeated overtime. In comparison to the content shown back in the 90s, the age ratings for movies have lowered dramatically. It can be argued that we have become desensitised and therefore to encourage us, the audience, to watch more movies, the scenery has to become more explicit to increase our interest. Furthermore, the advancement in technology means that accessing all types of content is much easier which consequently means that its becoming more and more difficult to regulate what is shared and the suitable ages who can watch particular films.

I believe that the regulation practices that take place are no longer effective because as we evolve, we, the audience, are becoming very different in terms of our level of maturity, the way we think etc. Although 15 years or so ago people were different, the media we as a society were exposed to was restricted and the majority of us had limited access, however now, we can view whatever we want whenever and our development in regards to that and our behaviour after viewing certain media is much different to those 15 years ago. The point I am making is that, we are all very different in today's society so restricting media so some 12 year olds could be okay with watching a 15 movie in however there could be other 12 year olds that feel uncomfortable with it or the level of maturity or "development" could be quite low therefore theories such as the copycat theory could come into play and those who arent "ready" to watch certain films can imitate some of the actions resulting as a consequence of the age restrictions lowering.

However, it can also be argued that regulation practices are needed to avoid theories such as the snowball effect to take place. This theory is one that indicates that if we keep lowering ratings or restrictions, eventually there will be nothing to restrict an audience from. This will further emphasise desensitisation and can have a negative impact on viewers as the audience could become more aggressive as there is no "scapegoat" for them to release certain emotions.
